Mediterranean Studies

Mediterranean Studies (Studia śródziemnomorskie II stopień) English program

Description

Mediterranean Studies (English programme) is conceived as a degree programme created primarily for non-European candidates who are often brought up outside the Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian traditions.

The programme enables students an understanding of the Greco-Roman foundations of European culture and their confrontation and coexistence with Judeo-Christian thought, as well as the continuation of both cultural traditions in the very broad world of Mediterranean and European culture. Hence, the programme focuses equally on Greek, Roman, Jewish and Christian culture, and takes into account the comparative aspect and intercultural dialogue. These are particularly important for the topics of master’s theses, which respect the students’ prior preparation and education. Thus, the programme offers highly qualified professionals from non-European countries preparation for participation in European culture regardless of their profession, dialogue with it, as well as integration related to the change of residence.

Mediterranean Studies is a programme:

1. inter- and trans-cultural, shaped in dialogue with students’ cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

2. modular, providing a flexible and personalised learning experience, with an important research component, especially regarding the thesis topics.

3. providing the key to an understanding of Europe and its cultural identity, including: Classical (Greco-Roman) literature and culture; Classical and Judeo-Christian traditions; the most important aspects of Mediterranean culture in a contemporary perspective, optionally extended by the category of Heritage Tourism.

In this way, the traditions consist modern Mediterranean Studies: Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian, and Arab-Islamic, will become a platform for encounter and dialogue, while respecting one’s own religious and cultural identity.
